町屋散策 Walking Around Machiya

今日は町屋を歩いてみた。以前から降りてみたい町だったが機会がなかった。

Today, I walked around Machiya area. I had been wanting to come, and I finally did.

今日行くことにしたのは、「官能都市ランキングというのを作った」というような本を読んだから。誤解を招きそうな名前だけど、自分の五感に訴えてくる居心地の良い町をアンケートからランキング化するというもの。

Why did I go today? Because I read a book about 'sensuous cities.' The author conducted a big survey and made a ranking to find sensuous cities which are fun to live and walk around.

全国一位は東京都文京区だったが行ったことがある。その本には、「荒川区は文京区程の官能都市ではないが、比較的に家賃も安く穴場」とあったので、興味が湧いた。

The No.1 sensuous city according to the survey was Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo
(The ward owns Yanesen area), but I've already been there. I went to Machiya because the book said, "Arakawa Ward is not as sensuous as Bunkyo Ward, but is not bad at all. It's cheaper to live there, too."

町屋駅から少し裏の路地に入ると、真っ直ぐでない道ばかりで、更に細い抜け道もあり、面白かった。古い家屋も何か趣きがあり良かった。

I walked into the residential area from the station. The streets were narrow and somewhat winding. There were also smaller alleys going across. The older buildings had a good vibe.

これも旅の一つと思って、現地の人(と言っても店の人だけど)に話しかけたりした。最後にコーヒーに寄った西日暮里駅近くのスペインバルの店員さんとも話した。日本人とスペイン人のハーフで、今もマドリッドに住む日本人のお父さんは、文筆家で本を書いているとのことだった。最近書くことに興味があるので、何だか嬉しかった。

I cosidered today's expedition as a small trip. When you go on a trip, it's more fun to talk to local people, right? So I talked to people working there. I dropped by a Spanish bar for a cup of coffee just before leaving. There was a half-Spanish waiter, and I talked to him. His father still lives in Madrid, and is a writer. I was interested because I'm absorbed in writing these days.

「自分ならここに住むかな？」とか考えながら歩いてみたが、我孫子・柏地区に戻ってきて、ホッとしてる自分がいた。やっぱり23区のお隣との近さは自分には厳しいかな。

As I was walking, I thought, "Would I live here?" But I found myself really relieved to be back to my hometown now: Abiko/Kashiwa. It might be hard for me to live in Tokyo where things are very crowded.

ところで、たとえ電車で40分の町だとしても、旅をするんだというスタンス。自分でも少し気に入った‼️

BTW, I liked my stance of 'traveling' even if the destination is just 40 minutes away by train. Where shall I 'travel' next?
