A Visit to a Museum 美術館

Today, I visited a museum in Ueno. I've been wanting to visit one because an author of a book I read recently says she often comes up with creative ideas when she visits a museum. It's something that makes her inner life rich and creative.

Actually, I didn't come up with any creative ideas after the visit, but it's always fun to focus on something and let your imagination fly freely‼️ Below are some thoughts as I looked at some of the paintings:

1. "The Infant Saint John with the Lamb" by Murillo

The infant John the Baptist was so cute❗️Obviously, he was a Latin boy. I realized that, in art, you can paint a Japanese Jesus. That's what established European artists were doing back then. Apparently, the lamb the boy is holding symbolizes Jesus. The warm relationship between them since the childhood warmed up my heart, too.

2. "Kitchen Scene with Christ in the House of Martha and Mary" by Velazquez

This painting is so funny‼️A girl is cooking in a bad mood. It's obvious that she doesn't enjoy the chore. The mother (grandmother?) next to her is pointing at a painting of Martha and Mary listening to Jesus. Martha was a hardworker and the painting of her signifies the importance of hardwork. Mom is saying, "Work hard just like Martha!" The daughter doesn't bother to hide her annoyance of the message😂

3. " The Duke of Wellington" by Goya

It's a portrait of a war hero: the Duke of Wellington. Even though he is dressed in a beautiful war uniform with lots of honorable budges, it seems as if his soul is not there. To me, he seems to be suffering from PTSD. Goya does a great job showing that.

As I was looking at the portraits of prominent people at the time, I kind of felt compassionate to the noble people then. Were all of them really desiring to be portraited? Posing to look grandiose seems rather lame to me. Also, great artistic skills of the artists sometimes show negative attributes such as immaturity and weak-willed nature. It's kind of scary to me‼️
